Lower Back Pain and Sciatica

Sciatic pain - nerve pain that radiates down the back of the leg, sometimes all the way to the foot- can be very severe and disabling. The pain is often bad sitting or standing or lying in bed or all of them. If you have bad sciatica you will feel desperate to get relief. Pain killers may give partial relief but come with side effects and don't address most causes of this terrible pain.

Lower back pain can be a chronic nagging ache or can be bad enough that you can't stand up straight. Either way, it's exhausting.

Chiropractic is a well-known way to help lower back pain and sciatica -  you don't have to be resigned to suffer forever.

Sciatica stems from a number of causes - a bulging or herniated disc, inflammation, spinal arthritis/spinal stenosis, and other reasons. To treat effectively, we need to identify the exact problem. Most of these things do not resolve on their own, or the pain gets better and then keeps coming back.

Most of these causes respond to gentle chiropractic care.

Each patient must be evaluated with a thorough physical exam and sometimes x-rays or MRI  to determine the cause of his or her pain. We will do this.

In almost all cases, we will treat you on your first visit to start your relief, even if more studies are needed.

Treatments we have found to help many patients with lower back pain and sciatica include:

  • Applied Kinesiology balancing of the muscles that support the lower back is of great help for restoring strength of the low back, speeding healing and reducing recurrence.
  • Flexion-distraction using a table that allows us to open up the space between vertebrae and restore improved motion.
  • Ultrasound - a therapy that produces deep heat, relaxes muscles and relieves pain.
  • Chiropractic adjustments, depending on the patient's condition, these might be manual adjustments, instrument-assisted adjustments, flexion-distraction, or other low-force techniques.
  • Acupuncture - especially with difficult forms of sciatica, such as spinal stenosis, we find acupuncture can be quite helpful for some patients when nothing else has given relief.
